# Cart discounts and targets A cart discount has an eligibility rule, a target, and a value. The rule decides whether the cart qualifies. The target decides whether the reduction applies to the total, selected line items, or shipping. ## Eligibility and target are separate For example, a cart may qualify when its EUR subtotal reaches EUR 100.00. A line-item target can then restrict the saving to accessories. A qualifying cart with no matching accessory lines has nothing for that line target to discount. A cart predicate reads the whole cart. A line-item target predicate reads one line directly, so it starts with fields such as `product`, `variant`, or `quantity`. See [Cart predicate language](/concepts/cart-predicate-language#line-item-target-predicates). ## Define the amount deliberately Use an absolute money reduction or the documented relative factor. Pair amount thresholds with a currency condition. A threshold of `10000` has no consistent meaning across different currencies without that condition. A code requirement, validity window, priority, or combination policy can further restrict application. Read [Discount codes and combination](/concepts/discounts/codes-and-combination) when offers overlap. ## Display applied discounts Read the cart, line, and shipping discount applications that correspond to the target. Use Thor's returned totals and tax values after adding or removing a code. Do not distribute a total reduction across lines with an independent frontend formula. Follow [Create a discount campaign](/guides/operations/discount-campaign) for a complete fixed-amount example.
